Born on April 15, 1894, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Bessie Smith was one of ten children. Both of her parents had died by her eighth birthday, and she was raised by her older sister Viola and encouraged to sing and dance by her oldest brother Clarence. He soon joined the Moses Stokes traveling show, leaving Smith and their brother Andrew to sing for pennies on Chattanooga street corners.
Clarence later arranged an audition for Smith with the Moses Stokes Company and she was hired as a dancer in 1912. She became friends with an older Moses Stokes veteran, Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, who was called the Mother of the Blues and likely exercised some influence over the young singer. Smith had her own voice, however, and owed her success to no one. Her heavy, throaty vocals were balanced by a delightful sense of timing. Her live shows were a blend of comedy and drama in song. Smith was popular in Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore, but she was beloved in the South. In 1923, her vaudeville touring led her to Memphis, where she played packed houses at the Palace Theater on Beale Street.

MUSICWOMEN CONFERENCE

We celebrate our 5th Anniversary as a non-profit organization and all members who reside in South Florida are invited to attend our anniversary dinner on Tuesday, October 9 @ 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Tarpon Bend Restaurant. Jeannie Cheatham is our third Honorary Member, after Vice Mayor Hayward Benson, Jr., and our first – First Lady Michelle Obama. Jeannie is a pianist, vocalist, composer and author of the song and book, “Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On”. At 85, she lives in San Diego in a comfortable senior assisted living facility.
Her motto is “When the sun goes down, please have someone around to give you a cold drink of water, especially on your dying bed.” That sentiment is the bottom line of the upcoming conference because the cliche “survival of the fittest” certainly applies to musicians who seem to be among the only people who work well into their 80’s, if they are so fortunate to live a long life. Jeannie believes that musicians need to learn how to put money away for the end of their lives. Most don’t get a pension, as do people in other professional fields. So, musicians must have a way to secure their senior years.
Jimmie Cheatham played trombone with the Duke Ellington Band and had a professorship at University of Wisconsin. This musical couple’s archives are housed at the University of Kansas City (photos, sheet music, etc.), Smithsonian (live interviews), and University of Ohio (videos).

Women In Jazz South Florida, Inc., A Necessity
The organization Women in Jazz inspires me. Its founder Joan Cartwright is a dynamo with vision and a far reaching organization with a global membership of female musicians. Although I taught Jazz in my middle school music classroom, the workshops/performances presented by local musicians through WIJSF made the music real. Students learned a repertoire of songs composed by members of the organization and performed them at various venues including the Amaturo Theatre. Learning the history of jazz, seeing the photos of the musicians, paintings of musicians by local artist Charles Mills, and hearing anecdotes from days gone by truly made those important connections with history, art, and music for the students. These important musicians are lost in the annals of music history. [See photos]
WIJSF chronicles that history that might soon be forgotten. The legacy of Women in Jazz must be taught and made available to students through books, live presentations, slides, workshops etc. Organizations such as WIJSF are valuable not only to keep the legacy alive but to chronicle the professionals who continue to perform and enlighten our lives with that music called Jazz.
