WIMUST Conference – July 4-7, 2013 – Fiuggi, Italy

jcpurple1From the Editor:  My trip to Donne in Musica’s WIMUST Conference in Fiuggi, Italy, July 4-7, 2013, is shaping up because of the generosity of 38 supporters who have donated $1,600 to date!!! This is 45% of my goal of $3,500, that I am requesting for travel to Italy.  I am crediting each member who donates $50 or more with 2013-14 Membership. Thanks to those who have given. You are moving the entire mission of our organization forward.

In an effort to get to Italy, I am asking members, family, friends, and supporters to help raise funds for my travel expenses to this important conference that will discuss the status of women musicians in Europe and the world.  Please donate at GoFundMe.

Before I leave, I have the great opportunity to work with a Miami non-profit that serves youth coming out of foster care.  On Wednesday, June 19 and 26, Marika Guyton and Lorna Lesperance will accompany me at Miami-Dade Community College in two 2-hour workshops with these young people, through a grant from Educate Tomorrow, founded by Virginia McNaught and her sisters. Brett McNaught heard me on WLRN 91.3 FM Radio with Ed Bell. He was so impressed with the work we do to promote women musicians that he contacted me, invited me to lunch with his wife Virginia, and contracted us to facilitate workshops with the young people that Educate Tomorrow services.  We will talk with these young people about women musicians, music history, and entrepreneurship in the music industry.  We look forward to this opportunity with faith that it will be an ongoing activity for our members to work with this population.

We appreciate each and every one of our members and challenge you to bring in new members, who are musicians, composers, vocalists, or supporters.  Six years of service reinforces our intent to stay alive and active!

If you or a woman composer you know would like to submit a song to our fourth compilation CD, please email me at divajc47@yahoo.com. This CD will release in January 2014, and will feature the music of 10 fabulous female composers. Please get a copy of the first three compilation CDs and share the link with friends. call-compcd4

Past Accomplishments . . .

Renee Baker, Chicago, IL

Chicago Modern Orchestra Project founder and music director Renée Baker is an artist who defies categorization. Indeed, she is very active in the cultural life of Chicago, having been a member of the Chicago Sinfonietta since 1987 and serves as the ensemble’s principal violist and also serves as Artistic Director of Mantra Blue Free Orchestra, an ensemble that performs both freely-improvised and through-composed music. Ms. Baker is also a prolific composer whose works have been premiered by the Chicago Sinfonietta, The Joffrey Ballet Chamber Series, and as part of Chicago’s PianoForte Salon Series and the Umbria Jazz Festival, in Italy. On Sunday, May 26, 2013, Ms. Baker and the Chicago Modern Orchestra Chamber Ensemble presented a concert titled “Spirit Matters”, which features works inspired by Ms. Baker’s equal yet second love, visual art. The four pieces on this program are inspired by the work of Mark Rothko and Joan Miró, two of the most important visual artists of the twentieth century.
