Two WIJSF Projects for 2019

PROJECT I – Article Submission:

After four publications of our Catalog of Women in Arts & Business (2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018), we have an advertisement base sufficient enough to warrant the publication of Musicwoman Magazine©®™, which has been part of our Business Plan for over seven years. This is the link to the first online magazine we published in August 2013: http://issuu.com/joancartwright/docs/mwmag_august2013

This process began because our Past President Lorna Lesperance demanded that we have advertisers to support the publication. Since 2014, we have been able to print and distribute 10,000 catalogs with the help of a printing grant from Conquest Graphics. This year, we were awarded $2,500 in FREE printing. We still have $1,250 left and we will be engaged in the contest to accrue more FREE printing for 2019.

The purpose of Musicwoman Magazine©®™ is to highlight our musical members. You are hereby invited to submit your article for publication in our first official publication in March 2019. The rules are as follows:

  1. Only WIJSF members in good standing (dues paid in 2018) may submit an article.
  2. Your article must be 700-1000 words.
  3. You must submit at least three photographs (1200-2500 pixels) with your article.
  4. Your article should highlight the pros and cons of your career as a woman in music, including
    1. Challenges you faced as a woman in the music industry
    2. Mentors who helped your career
    3. Accomplishments you experienced like having your music performed or licensed by a filmmaker, orchestra, theater company, etc.
  5. All articles will be reviewed by a panel of judges including at least three (3) WIJSF Board Members and three (3) WIJSF Members.
  6. At least five (3) articles will be chosen for printing in the magazine. The criteria for an article being chosen include:
    1. The article is exciting and interesting.
    2. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are meticulous.
    3. Photographs are colorful and of high quality.
  7. The top five (5) articles will be printed. The remaining articles that meet the criteria will be posted on our blog at womeninjazzsouthflorida.wordpress.com
  8. All published articles will be exclusive to Musicwoman Magazine©®™.
  9. Unless we receive a grant for this project, no remuneration will be forthcoming.

Review our first publication and email me at wijsf@yahoo.com if you are planning to submit your article. The deadline for article submission is August 15, 2018.

Donne in Musica Call for Scores

Since the inception of Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., our affiliation with Fondazione Adkins-Chiti: Donne in Musica has been enriching. Our founder Dr. Joan Cartwright had the honor of attending the WIMUST Conference in Italy, in 2014, through funding from our members.  Today, we received this message and we are posting it here for all women composers:

Global Women in Music for Human Rights

Women’s music is an essential part of world heritage.

The fundamental role of women in the creation and transmission of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and the creation and practice of music belongs not only to a people or a culture but to all of humanity.

The UN Human Rights Office celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (10thDecember 1948) and has launched a worldwide campaign to promote, engage and reflect on human rights.   Gender inequality in the field of music is a worldwide challenge. Sustaining the women creating music will influence public opinion and stimulate their full participation in cultural life.    Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica has organized a “Global Call for New Music” for women composers and creators of the music of all ages, nationalities and musical backgrounds.  Participants will compose/create a song, choral or instrumental work inspired by the struggle for Human Rights. Ten works, chosen by an international Reading Commission and publicly announced at the end of July, will be performed and recorded in a Gala Concert in the Teatro Argentina, Rome, Italy on the 5th November this year.

Art and human rights are universal languages and the UN Human Rights Office is pleased to count on the support of the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica in the 70th  Anniversary campaign for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is an occasion in which to reaffirm that the rights of women and girls are an inalienable, integral and indivisible part of universal human rights. We look forward to the engagement of all musicians, teachers, and researchers in promoting women’s artistic empowerment.” says Laurent Sauveur, Chief of External Relations of the UN Human Rights Office.

Donne in Musica (Women in Music) born in 1978 as a movement became an international non-profit Foundation in 1996. It promotes and mainstreams music by women composers, songwriters and music creators of all ages and nationalities working in all genres while coordinating a network of over 27,000 composers, affiliate organizations, performers, pedagogues, and musicologists in 113 countries. The Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica encourages excellence in contemporary music and intercultural dialogue worldwide. Its pioneering role in the affirmation of the concept of the uniqueness of women as creators of music has been recognized by the Italian government, UNESCO, EUC, EUP, Arab Academy and UNESCO’s International Music Council.  Its daily work includes:

  • Promoting knowledge and respect for women’s cultural diversity, creativity, and rights
  • Advocacy and recommendations to protect and assist composers.
  • Capacity Building
  • Research and Publication of books and scholarly papers
  • Music for the Mind – supplying music for Conservatories in need

THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, it set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.  The Declaration was adopted by the UN General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948.Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status. We are all entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.

Please meditate on:

  • All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights
  • Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security
  • Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion
  • Everyone has the right to education
  • Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any literary or artistic production of which he or she is the author.
