The need for spinal surgery led to Dr. Cartwright’s infirmity in June and July. We apologize for the tardiness of this month’s newsletter. Good things are brewing.

Our office moved to North Carolina, along with Joan and her daughter (our President) Mimi Johnson.

On June 30, 2022, Musicwoman Archive and Cultural Center (MACC) was incorporated in the State of North Carolina as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization for the purpose of lobbying for the financial support of women musicians in Washington, D.C.

The mission of MACC is to increase the dollar amount of grants and performance fees for women composers and instrumentalists. In the $19 Billion music industry, women earn less than 15% of earnings from federal, county, municipal, and private grants and endowments. This is gender discrimination on the part of grant recipients, including cultural organizations, festival and concert producers, record labels, performance rights organizations, artist awards efforts, and a plethora of grantees who receive funding from public tax dollars.

A 5% increase would put $950 million into play for women musicians. The mission of MACC is to provide educational services to the public about women’s musical creation, documentation, and preservation. The Cultural Center will employ people from the surrounding communities and provide employment for out-of-state staff in various capacities, including education, construction, engineering, horticulture, agriculture, environmental protection, culinary arts, and entertainment.
