MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear WIJSF Members:
June just whizzed by. The most fun we had, this month was Mimi Johnsondotnet’s Genius Ladies concert at Ferg’s 258 Bar & Lounge in East Point, GA. See the wonderful photos on Facebook. Also, check out Mimi’s stage play scheduled for July 9 in Roswell, GA, below.
In this issue, I would like to address supplemental income for musicians. Besides teaching, conducting workshops, and having a day job, I would like to suggest that you consider joining my travel club as a traveler and/or as a business partner. The one thing that most musicians have in common is that we travel. Of course, my experience has been that promoters and presenters pay for my travel expenses. However, as I get older and less in demand for stage performances, my wanderlust does not decrease. Our new member Lucretia Daniel was introduced to me by Lydia Harris in 2013. Both of these ladies are dynamos and now we are a team of travel agents. Visit my FYI TRAVEL CLUB blog for more information and join us in our quest to see the world and make a considerable income! Be sure to see my Bucket List and do not hesitate to ask me questions.
MEMBERSHIP DUES
Ladies and gentlemen, FYI, WIJSF dues come due every March 1. I’m sure you know how difficult it is for most of us in this downturned economy. I want to thank Lydia Harris and Peggy Duquesnel Malbron for paying their dues, last month. I encourage you to pay your dues in support of the work we do through this organization. Just go to www.wijsf.org or www.wijsf.com/join.htm and pay online. If you prefer to mail a check payable to Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., just let me know and I’ll email you our address. Also, we now have 273 members. With your help, we can get to 300 by the year’s end, so please invite ONE friend to join us. Remember, they do not need to be a musicians to join us in our mission to promote women musicians, globally!
The most important statement from a woman musician in this century!!! Téja Lanise please tell her we salute her!
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Karen Briggs, Robin Bramlett, Joan Cartwright, Gail Jhonson, Kim Scott, Benita Lewis, and Darlene Moreno. It was delightful to meet and hear Jazz in Pink at the Steel City Jazz Fest in Birmingham, AL, on June 7, 2014. They are dynamic on stage!
On June 22, Téja Lanise (bass) performed with Jonelle Monae at the Hollywood Bowl and STEVIE WONDER walked onstage for a surprise performance! He SANG and PLAYED! Téja declared, “It was AMAZING! I’m still in shock! It was all I could do to contain myself onstage! Of course, I cried after the show was over. I’m just SO grateful for all these amazing, unexpected blessings in the past 6 months! I could have never dreamt this!”
Prior to being on stage with Brandy and Prince, while performing with mega-star Janelle Monae, whose group Jamanati was featured on The David Letteman Show on June 11, Téja toured with Musique Soulchild, and was a part of Amazing Musicwomen with Joan Cartwright, in 2012.
Congratulations to Dr. Donna Singer.
Auditions are over for me with NBC The Voice.
I am very happy to say that I made it to the 4th round out of 6.
It’s been a fun, crazy, wouldn’t change it for the world ‘ride’. Thanks everyone for the love and support. Next stop, international jazz festival in Nebraska with The Doug Richards Trio, not a bad gig.
Also, Donna got hired for gig in Pompano, FL, and Jazziz Jazz Club/Restaurant in Boca Raton, FL, Entertainment Manager asked me for my press kit.
Both are great establishments in South Florida, Hooray!
Extra Extra Donna Singer has recorded a video with Doug Richards Trio. Her husband, Roy Singer wrote this song with Carole Belle. This video goes live on MTV – VH1 and BET in one week, yippee!!
Lucretia Daniel just completed a tour in California and Nevada

Please keep Yvette Norwood Tiger in your prayers as she is recovering from serious surgery and send some light and love to her husband Steve Tiger, too! This was a sudden circumstance and she is working very hard to recover. Yvette was scheduled to perform with us on February 2 and March 10, 2013. With your prayers, she may recover in time, however, it’s a long road for her to travel. Yvette is a talented young vocalist with a heart of gold. We miss her smiling face and beautiful voice, very much. If you care to email her, just let me know, and I’ll send you her email address.
Thanks,
JC
Here’s why WIJSF exists
[October 28, 2012] This just in, the promoters of the Miami Nice Jazz Festival at Gusman in Miami, last Friday, didn’t have Dee Dee Bridgewater’s money ready before the concert, per her contract, and the lady refused to play!! After keeping the audience waiting for about a half hour, she and the band showed on stage and explained why her group would not be playing. Would the promoter try that with a male leader?
Attendees got to hear some good music from the two warm-up acts AND they can get a full refund on tickets!
Here’s what’s happening with us in November!
Victorya Cole performs at “The Friday Night Jazz” from 5:30 to 7:30 on Friday, November 2, 2012, at the Palm Beach Public Library, 411 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach, Fl 33401, with Mark Marineau (piano), Don Coffman (bass), and Karl Ott (drums).
On Monday, November 12, 2012, 7:30 pm, Victorya will do “Jazz In The Sanctuary” A Dozen Divas Divine with Jim van Voorheis (piano), Chris Hulka (bass), and Claudio Berardi (drums); at The Church of the Nativity, 1151 SW Del Rio Boulevard, Port St. Lucie, Fl 34953. Call 772-343-0401 for tickets.
This concert is funded by a grant from Broward Schools through the Student Enrichment in the Arts Program (SEAS).

Welcome to our 200th member, LaQuetta Shamblee, founder and executive producer of Instrumental Women. LaQuetta’s philosophy matches that of Joan Cartwright, founder and executive director of Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc. LaQuetta said, “When most people think of ‘women in jazz,’ they think of vocalists; and those who are able to name are rarely able to include female musicians who play instruments traditionally associated with male musicians (drums, trombone, bass). Even in 2012, few people are aware of the long list of women instrumentalists who are a part of jazz history, since its early development. Thus, the purpose for Instrumental Women.”
Geetu Hinduja is a fine guitarist and composer from Mumbai, India. She is our 199th member and decided to switch from being in art consulting to being an artist. She is touring India with her quartet.
Connecting with Renee Baker from Chicago, IL, our 198th Member, was finding the Motherlode! Renee Baker is the fabulous composer of over 900 compositions (click link and scroll) for strings, woodwinds, orchestra, and her smaller ensemble.
An accomplished violinist, Renee Baker has shifted from purely classical to jazz music and she is passionate about the switch. Her Chicago Modern Orchestra Project and FAQtet perform, nationally, and globally! Renee said, ““There is an urgent, compelling element to being able to let go, allowing yourself to shout and having it manifest itself on paper and then sent out into the world as performance. I don’t do a lot of second guessing…I don’t take back prayers – the original shout-out is the most genuine.”
I create music. I compose it. I play it. I paint it.
Watch this video with Renee Baker’s orchestra members. . .
These ladies are rehearsing their songs to be performed on November 14 for students at Dillard Center for the Arts in Fort Lauderdale. The concert will include the music of Robin Avery and Joan Cartwright with accompaniment by Paul Banman (p), Jimmy Daniel (d), Anthony Turner (b), Malcolm Black (sax), and Wayne Rediker (guitar).
The challenge of being a composer and musician for a woman can lead to strange and wonderful twists in our economic paths. Sometimes, we experience dread and other times our lives, much like a roller coaster, swings up and over all the cares we think we have in the world. As creatives, we find other means of expression than making music. For Teri Wilson, developing her own line of bath and beauty products is filling the need for both creativity and income.
Sharon Marie Cline has a campaign on Indiegogo.com that outlines her project. Please if you are moved to do so, check it out and contribute, $20 or more. We have many perks and offerings… and you will be helping to bring a dream to fruition. Pleasego to: I WANT TO DONATE NOW!
In Gratitude, Sharon
