Did you know?

Sylvia Moy was the first woman to produce at Detroit’s Motown Records. She wrote My Cherie Amour, It Takes Two, This Old Heart of Mine, Uptight, and won 20 BET Awards and 6 Grammy Nominations but is unknown. Why is that? We will explore Moy’s collaboration with Stevie Wonder and other Motown notables in Musicwoman Magazine 2024.

At Musicwoman Magazine and Musicwoman Radio, we promote women composers from all genres, and from jazz, blues, and R&B, in particular.

Congratulations to the Sunshine Jazz Organization celebrating 37 years of musical service to the South Florida Community. I salute the 2023 inductees into the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame. Kudos to Keith Valles and Thelma Valles for keeping the legacy of China Valles alive and so vibrantly rich in Miami and points North, South, East, and West! Many of my musical associates are featured on November 4, 2023, in Miami. I had the joy of singing with Mike Gerber on several occasions. Jesse Jones is featured on the first issue of Musicman Magazine (2020). Curtis Lundy is an old friend from New York, though he and his sister Carmen Lundy are from Miami, Florida. I have not met Christina Alexander. But knowing the caliber of artists presented and honored by SJO, she must be as talented as she looks, which is exquisite. Leesa Richards, Jesse Jones, and Keith Valles are members of our nonprofit, http://www.wijsf.org

Keynote: Who gives voice to diversity in jazz?

Dr Joan Cartwright is a renowned veteran of the Jazz and Blues stage for 40+ years. She is a vocalist, composer, and author of several books, including her memoir with touring and teaching experiences, and was honoured as the first Lady Jazz Master by Black Women in Jazz Awards in Atlanta, GA, in 2014. Her titles include Amazing MusicwomenSo You Want To Be A Singer? and A History of African American Jazz and Blues with interviews of Quincy Jones, Dewey Redman, Lester Bowie, among other jazz musicians and aficionados.

In 2007, she founded Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., a non-profit organization to promote women musicians. In 2022, the organization released its 8th CD of women composers. Dr Cartwright hosts MUSICWOMAN Radio, featuring women who compose and perform their own music at BlogTalkRadio, has two personal CDs Feelin’ Good and In Pursuit of a Melody, and featured as an actor in Last Man and The Siblings, two sitcoms produced by MJTV Network. In June 2022, she decide to incorporate Musicwoman Archive and Cultural Center in North Carolina to preserve the music of women composers and instrumentalists.
