Message from the Executive Director

20141103_171014-2This year is gone but much was accomplished in 2014.  We’re preparing to release our 5th compilation CD of fabulous female composers on January 2, 2015.  Can you believe we’ve promoted the music of almost 50 women?!  In 2015, we will continue to bring awareness about the music of women with the goal of getting more presenters to include our members in their programming.
Personally, I’m feeling very fulfilled. I’ve got one more year to complete my DBA in Business Administration and I’m really looking forward to scheduling interviews with many of our musical members for my dissertation. There is so much data to collect and I trust one year will be enough time to do my study.
Also, in 2015, we may have enough people signed up to hold a Symposium on Women in Arts at some location in Washington, D.C., as I have not heard any response from The White House on this issue, although we have 395 signatures on the petition, which may not be enough to even get a response. What are your thoughts on this event? Is it necessary? Do you, as a female musician feel marginalized in the music industry? Send your response to me at divajc47@yahoo.com.

“Peggy’s latest musical offering is a beautiful double disc of holiday music. Each song is an incredible jazzed up re-interpretation of some of your favorite holiday music and of course there are a few of Peggy’s originals that will keep you interested in her long after the holidays are over simply because of her lovely vocals and impeccable pianos skills.” —  Sounds of Timeless Jazz

Christmas is my FAVORITE holiday. So many great songs – so little time to sing them!

This year, I’m excited to present A Different Kind of Christmas Concert in partnership with Desert Spring United Methodist Church of Summerlin, Las Vegas. The program will include performance of sacred and secular holiday songs and instrumental compositions that I just really like a lot (and usually only sing by myself, at the top of my lungs in my car…also, at the grocery store).

The title, A Different Kind of Christmas, speaks not only to my ChamberSoul style; it’s the name of Desert Spring United Methodist Church’s seasonal fundraising effort. Though concert admission is free, a love offering will be collected to help raise funds to support the building of a Habitat for Humanity home in the Las Vegas community.

Message from the Executive Director

catalog coverThis month, the newsletter is published late because I was on a month-long cruise from October 12 to November 9, with little Internet access. Although it was fun entertaining hundreds of guest on the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ship on the high seas, the downside is that little got done for WIJSF, except that I was able to introduce many of the cruise guests to our organization by giving them our business card with our website and a few of the catalogs. I even met a couple that publish a magazine “Treasures of the Heart” in Pembroke Pines, Florida, that may be interested in publishing some of the stories about our musical members. So, all was not lost. My experience on the high seas was enhanced by visiting several countries, including St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Jamaica, and Mexico. It’s always wonderful to experience other cultures and made me happy to be an American, when I realized how many amenities we enjoy in the USA. Each Sunday, our band had to evacuate the ship and go through customs, a feat I can do without for the remainder of this year. The long lines were tedious as some weeks there were up to 6,000 guests disembarking. Since we were not regular crew members, this was an unfortunate part of our requirements. By the Sunday that we left the ship, I had truly had enough of this exercise. As usual, the music was our saving grace. We had lots of fun, entertaining hundreds of Jazz and Blues lovers, and I’m sure we left a lasting impression on many of them. As you all know, I’m ever conscious of the need to give women musicians working opportunities. I called three women to do this gig with me – Bertha Hope, Linda Presgrave, and Sally Smith – all pianists, but none were available with such short notice (I only had about a week to pull a band together). So, I wound up engaging three men to do the gig – Walter Bland (p), Anthony Chatman (b), and Art Weiss (d). With the uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, I’m sure the ladies are grateful they were unable to accompany me.

jc-dinahwashingtonwayspeakerCALLING ALL WOMEN COMPOSERS! The deadline to submit your original composition for the WIJSF Music Collection V is October 15. We have 7 spots left, so do not procrastinate. Contact Joan at divajc47@yahoo.com ASAP!!! The flier with all the details is at the bottom of this blog.
The newsletter is a few days late this month, due to my return from Chicago, where I had the honor of speaking at the street naming ceremony of Dinah Washington Way on August 29.  What a great day that was. So many Jazz seniors were in attendance and I got to meet a lot of Facebook friends face-to-face like two of our members saxophonist Diane Ellis and Alvin Carter-Bey, the producer of the event, and Senabella Blue, the Mistress of Ceremony, Sasha Daltonn, producer of Sasha Sings Dinah, several of Dinah’s family members, and vocalists Dee Alexander and Maggie Brown, daughter of the legendary lyricist/vocalist Oscar Brown, Jr.  Then, on August 30, I had the privilege of doing a book signing at the DuSable African American Museum, where I met some wonderful Chicagoans and Ohioans, who purchased my books and our compilation CDs. Thanks to Deborah Collins for facilitating this opportunity for me! Finally, I attended the John Wright Jazz Party in Matteson, IL, where I met more Jazz-loving Chicagoans and had a terrific time, listening to the music of resident musicians and vocalists with Al Carter-Bey! What a great week!

New Video: “Work it Out” Performance clips:

RAGAN WHITESIDE is a CONTEMPORARY JAZZ FLAUTIST AND VOCALIST. She released QUANTUM DRIVE on JULY 8. Quantum Drive is her third studio release, fusing the coolest elements of Contemporary Jazz, Classic R&B, Neo-Soul, and Hip-Hop, appealing to musicians and music lovers. Collaborating with Ragan are Contemporary Jazz Keyboardist and Arranger Bob Baldwin, Soul Singer-Songwriter and Pianist Frank McComb, Soul Jazz Flutist Althea René, and multi-Grammy Award nominated Singer, Pianist, and Composer Patrice Rushen, who lent her keyboard wizardry to Ragan’s remake of her classic tune, “Remind Me”. QUANTUM DRIVE offers a clever and unique way of unifying generations of music. From the 60’s jerk-worthy “Soul Biscuit” to the Dirty South line-dancing “Work it Out” to the underground club-hopping “Quantum Drive,” there is always something to make you nod your head. “Smokey Room” satisfies your inner jazz fusion-ista while “Like the First Time” embodies the best aspects of falling in love. Ragan Whiteside’s groove driven artistic approach to this musical journey will certainly propel you into a new dimension. Strap yourself in and close your eyes as she takes you down the road to infinite soul on her QUANTUM DRIVE. Available on Amazon and iTunes. For info visit www.raganwhiteside.

TEJA LANISE ON BASS IS LIVING THE DREAM!

Bassist Teja Lanise is living the dream, while touring with Janell Monae in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Europe!

Bassist Teja Lanise is living the dream, touring with Janell Monae in the USA, UK, Australia, Europe and the Middle East!

Internationally acclaimed pianist and vocalist Irene Robbins presented her new project Laughing with the Blues, a 4-part exposition of Jazz and Blues by STREAM DUO in southern Italy. Irene Robbins, who has been giving concerts for over 30 years in Europe, the USA, and Japan had an incredible response to her new project. A duo which she says “shows her naked” because of its sparsity with Irene Robbins on vocals and piano, and bassist Nico Catacchio performing their interpretations of Thelonious Monk’s Round Midnight, Coleman’s Lonely Woman, and Ellington’s Mood Indigo. Irene is touring Italy and Europe this summer and fall. She will be in Detroit, MI, in April 2015.

Sandra Kaye is completing her fourth year performing at the Long Bar at the Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai, China. See INTERVIEW below:

I was a server in a diner where it was customary to sing happy birthday to the customers. On one particular day at the diner, one of the regulars was celebrating his birthday. He informed our team of servers that he would prefer someone sing his favorite song.  I use to sing around the diner everyday, many times I wasn’t aware of what I was doing, I just loved to sing. However when he made his request, everyone looked at me. I was not very open to this, after all, I might not know his favorite song. (DRUM ROLL) My favorite song is “My Funny Valentine.” It just so happened I knew many songs in the Great American Song Book. So, I stood in the middle of the dinning room, “My Funny Valentine”.  The applause that filled this room and the compliments from everyone in sight made me feel very special. My fellow servers were spreading the word and I began singing for many of our customers, their favorite songs at birthday time.  Some of the songs were: “Always”, “All of Me”, “At Last”, “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “My Funny Valentine.”  With encouragement from my little boy at the time, and many others I set out to learn the music business on the local level.  Before long the doors were wide open.  My very first performances were with a pianist only. I loved performing with a piano only. I never thought about performing with other instruments. So I have come to realize this: When a singer is available, the instruments will find the singer. Today, I even perform with big bands.

It is such a given that our business is male dominated that I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it. However, I have felt sabotage, when I was the leader of an important event.  I have learned to cover my assets. My advice to young women coming into the music industry is “Know your music! Learn the business!  Be firm, but be a LADY with all men!” ~ Sandra Kaye

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear WIJSF Members:
jc1b
June just whizzed by. The most fun we had, this month was Mimi Johnsondotnet’s Genius Ladies concert at Ferg’s 258 Bar & Lounge in East Point, GA. See the wonderful photos on Facebook. Also, check out Mimi’s stage play scheduled for July 9 in Roswell, GA, below.
In this issue, I would like to address supplemental income for musicians.  Besides teaching, conducting workshops, and having a day job, I would like to suggest that you consider joining my travel club as a traveler and/or as a business partner.  The one thing that most musicians have in common is that we travel.  Of course, my experience has been that promoters and presenters pay for my travel expenses. However, as I get older and less in demand for stage performances, my wanderlust does not decrease.  Our new member Lucretia Daniel was introduced to me by Lydia Harris in 2013.  Both of these ladies are dynamos and now we are a team of travel agents.  Visit my FYI TRAVEL CLUB blog for more information and join us in our quest to see the world and make a considerable income!  Be sure to see my Bucket List and do not hesitate to ask me questions.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

Ladies and gentlemen, FYI, WIJSF dues come due every March 1.  I’m sure you know how difficult it is for most of us in this downturned economy.  I want to thank Lydia Harris and Peggy Duquesnel Malbron for paying their dues, last month. I encourage you to pay your dues in support of the work we do through this organization.  Just go to www.wijsf.org or www.wijsf.com/join.htm and pay online.  If you prefer to mail a check payable to Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., just let me know and I’ll email you our address. Also, we now have 273 members. With your help, we can get to 300 by the year’s end, so please invite ONE friend to join us.  Remember, they do not need to be a musicians to join us in our mission to promote women musicians, globally!

I’m still in shock! It was all I could do to contain myself onstage! Of course, I cried after the show was over. I’m just SO grateful for all these amazing, unexpected blessings in the past 6 months! I could have never dreamt this!”

Congratulations to Dr. Donna Singer.

Auditions are over for me with NBC The Voice.

I am very happy to say that I made it to the 4th round out of 6.

It’s been a fun, crazy, wouldn’t change it for the world ‘ride’. Thanks everyone for the love and support. Next stop, international jazz festival in Nebraska with The Doug Richards Trio, not a bad gig.

Also, Donna got hired for gig in Pompano, FL, and Jazziz Jazz Club/Restaurant in Boca Raton, FL, Entertainment Manager asked me for my press kit.

Both are great establishments in South Florida, Hooray!

Extra Extra Donna Singer has recorded a video with Doug Richards Trio. Her husband, Roy Singer wrote this song with Carole Belle. This video goes live on MTV – VH1 and BET in one week, yippee!!

Lucretia Daniel just completed a tour in California and Nevada
